Frequently Asked Questions

Private Yacht

A privately owned yacht is exclusively for personal use and not available for charter. The owner dictates all aspects of the yacht's operation, including the itinerary, crew, and onboard services. The owner is also responsible for all maintenance, operating costs, and crew salaries.

Charter Yacht

A charter yacht is offered for rent to individuals or groups for a specified duration. These yachts are staffed with professional crews, and clients pay a charter fee that encompasses the yacht and crew services. Charter itineraries are tailored to client preferences. In addition to the charter fee, clients typically cover expenses such as fuel, food, and other costs through an "Advanced Provisioning Allowance (APA)".

The Maritime Labour Convention (MLC) 2006 outlines the following limits for work or rest hours:

Maximum Work Hours:
  • 14 hours within any 24-hour period
  • 72 hours within any seven-day period
Minimum Rest Hours:
  • 10 hours within any 24-hour period
  • 77 hours within any seven-day period

However, it is essential to understand that during peak seasons, crew members should anticipate working extended and irregular hours due to the 24/7 operation of yachts.

When determining yacht crew salaries, numerous factors beyond just yacht size are crucial. The yacht's type (motor or sail), its operation (private, charter, or both), and its itinerary significantly affect salary offers. Furthermore, candidate attributes like prior experience, tenure in previous roles, newly acquired qualifications, and specialized skills all play a key part in salary negotiations.
